What is Bacterial Wilt—and What Can We Do About It?

For this blog, we owe special thanks to our reader and friend Sujit, who—among his many other talents—is a farmer in Uttar Pradesh, India. Sujit read our blog entry about the mystery ailment afflicting our eggplants, and he had some ideas as to what might have caused it. One of the possibilities he raised, bacterial wilt, was a new issue for us. So we talked with Sujit in more detail, did some research of our own, and made some changes in the Gardzen Test Gardens. And, of course, we wrote a blog about it. So let’s dig in and learn a bit more about bacterial wilt, eggplant, and how we can maintain a health garden space!

Eggplant Pests, Problems . . . and Solutions

Where we live, eggplant are fairly resilient. There aren’t many pests or diseases that we’ve encountered, although of course they exist and are more prevalent other places. Bacterial wilt for eggplant is most often caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, a soil-dwelling bacteria that infects Solanum plants like eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers. As these are common garden plants and among our favorites to grow, bacterial wilt definitely held our attention as soon as we learned about it.

What are the Symptoms of Bacterial Wilt?

The only definitive way to know if R. solanacearum is present in a plant or in the soil is to have a lab test done. Many local cooperative extensions have testing available, and the US FDA has a Ralstonia solanacearum mitigation program that may be able to help as well. As gardeners, we’re most likely to notice the symptoms in the infected plants first, and those tend to include the following:

· In geraniums and related flowering plants:

 Yellowing leaves, due to a lack of chlorophyll

 Wilting; the leaves and other above-ground parts of the plant dry out and become droopy.

 Dry, dead tissue: this usually starts in one or two locations on the plant and is most visible on the tips of leaves.

 Stem collapse: as the disease progresses, stems start to wither and collapse. This often starts at ground level. Stems and other vascular tissue may discolor, turning brown or black.

· In tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant:

 Wilting: in these plants, wilting caused by Ralstonia solanacearum tends to start on the youngest leaves during hot periods. They may appear to recover with heavy watering or after a rain. Dried and wilted leaves will remain green.

 The stems of infected plants may collapse and reveal brown, dead tissue. This may be accompanied by an ooze-like substance created by the bacteria.

 In potatoes, infected plants my show a gray-brown vascular ring inside the stem that expands as the disease progresses. When an infected potato tuber is cut open, it may ooze a milky-white sap that creates sticky threads as the halves of the potato are separated.

These symptoms are distinct, but they can be difficult to detect at first. Bacterial wilt often looks like heat damage or heat stress early on, which is another reminder of how important it is to spend time with our plants on a regular basis.

Some Expert Advice for Managing Bacterial Wilt

The only real way to know if bacterial wilt is present involves having the soil and plants tested, so if you suspect bacterial wilt we encourage you to contact your local agricultural extension or state/provincial agricultural office. When we were concerned about bacterial wilt, we got some expert advice from Sujit. This disease occurs regularly in his state in India and he offered this guidance for us all:

In my Nadoy village, especially during the hot and rainy season, bacterial wilt can be a possible reason for eggplant (baingan) plants suddenly wilting. The bacteria can stay in the soil and spread through irrigation or rainwater. The plant may look healthy one day and then suddenly become weak and wilt, even when there is enough moisture in the soil. If several plants are wilting one after another, bacterial wilt becomes more likely. For now, remove badly affected plants, avoid moving soil from sick plants to healthy areas, and wait for the agriculture office’s confirmation before treating the field.

We would add that disposing of infected plants should be done in the trash, rather than a compost heap or weed pile. This helps prevent the spread of Ralstonia solanacearum and other plant diseases. We can all do our part to help ensure that everyone’s gardens stay healthy!

More Advice for Healthy Eggplant

Sujit didn’t stop there: he blessed us with more expert advice for growing healthy eggplant plants and we’ll repeat it verbatim here:

For a healthy brinjal [eggplant] plant in your field:

· Morning: check soil moisture 5–7 cm below the surface.

· If dry: give a good, slow irrigation around the root zone.

· Mulch: dry straw/grass around the plant, leaving a small gap around the stem. This helps reduce evaporation.

· Check stems: look for borer holes.

· Check wilted plants: look for bacterial-wilt symptoms.

· Don't over-irrigate: particularly during rainy weather.

· ICAR [Indian Council of Agricultural Research] specifically recommends crop rotation with non-solanaceous crops and other integrated measures for reducing bacterial wilt, while pheromone traps and regular monitoring are useful against brinjal [eggplant] shoot/fruit borer.

This is the kind of experienced, practical advice we try to share, and it’s also a fascinating glimpse into how gardening and farming work in a different part of the world than the one in which we live. Growing and tending plants is a human universal, something we all share regardless of where we live.

Healthy Plants, Healthy Soil

We got lucky: our eggplant woes don’t seem to have been cause by bacterial wilt, though we followed Sujit’s suggestions and precautions just in case. We’ll make it a point to grow something non-solanaceous over the fall/winter and probably next spring and summer as well.
