Thanksgiving is upon us here in the USA, and around the world we’re moving into the holiday season and the gift-giving time of the year. If you’re a gardener or have a gardener in your life, you may want to consider giving some gifts that reflect that hobby and passion. You may also be a bit confused about where to begin, even if you’re an experienced gardener. Beginning gardeners, veterans, and folks who just like plants all have their own needs, but don’t worry. Gardzen is here to help with a fun list of suggestions for holiday gifts for gardeners.

We’ll get the shameless self promotion out of the way up front. It is a truth universally acknowledged that all gardeners are in need of more containers for plants, and containers make a practical yet attractive gift for any gardener in your life. Beginning gardeners are often especially short on containers, and receiving them as a holiday gift can be a real boon. You can find plant containers and flower pots in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and materials, making this gift flexible as well.

With that out of the way, let’s move on to seeds! Gardeners love, collect, and maybe even hoard seeds, and with good reason: seeds are where plants come from! We always recommend buying seeds from a reputable and ethical company, and many of those businesses offer gift certificates that can be redeemed via their websites. This is another flexible approach to holiday gift-giving particularly for beginning gardeners. You can help them get started with a per-selected collection of easy-growing seeds, or you can let a more experienced gardener pick and choose what they need for the coming season.

Every gardener needs a decent pair of gardening gloves, and we are notorious for not buying them for ourselves. This is a budget-friendly holiday gift; a quick trip to your local garden store can provide a good pair of gloves at a reasonable price or you can easily order quality gloves online. Sizing is generally pretty easy—S, M, L, XL—but do save a receipt in case someone needs to make an exchange. Most stores will offer a gift receipt to make that easier without revealing the price of the gift.

Speaking of local garden stores: many of them offer gift certificates as well. Savvy gardeners will spend these on things that don’t ship well, like soil or landscaping plants. Seedlings, saplings, and shrubbery are difficult to give as gifts but easy to purchase with a gift certificate from a local supplier, so consider this option if you’re stuck on finding the right holiday gift for the gardener in your life.

As with gloves, it’s easy for gardeners to put off buying or updating their garden tools. While gardening tools are a personal decision in a way, there are also some universals like trowels, shears, and cultivators that every gardener needs. These are found in nearly all garden stores and suppliers and can often be purchased in matched sets. And don’t worry: even if your gardener already has them everyone needs extras so duplicates are not a problem.

It’s a busy and festive time and we hope your holiday plans include both fun and relaxation, hopefully in your garden space. Whether you’re celebrating with others or enjoying some time at home, our guide for holiday gifts for gardeners will (hopefully) help simplify part of your festive season. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are both just around the corner, and for us anything that makes them easier is a blessing.
It won’t be the last time we say it, but: happy holidays from all of us at Gardzen!
